Upcoming Workshops: France and Italy

Upcoming Workshops: France and Italy I am offering photography workshops in France and Italy this year. These one week workshops will explore pinhole photography in stunning environments perfect for making unique black and white images. No darkroom or camera experience is necessary.

In France I am offering a weekend workshop on May 1 & 2, 2010 at tranquil Le Castelou part of Ariege Arts in the small village of Leran, near the French Pyrenees (about 80 min. south of Toulouse). The fee for the 2 day workshop is 150. Euros. This includes all workshop materials. In this introductory course you will learn to make and use a pinhole camera,  and develop the photos using a temporary darkroom. If you are interested in staying at Le Castelou, see their website for more details about the school and the bed and breakfast facilities.

The Italy workshop dates are scheduled for June 12 - 19, 2010.  If you are interested please contact me by March 31 as this is the application deadline date. We need a minimum number of students to run the course. The Pinhole workshop takes place at the International School of Painting, Drawing, and Sculpture at the breathtaking hill town of Monte Castello di Vibio, halfway between Rome and Florence. See www.giotto.org for details.

The weekly rate for the Italy course will be 1,300. Euros. (Does NOT include airfare.) Workshops run one week - Saturday to Saturday.

The week long Italy workshop includes:
  • Pinhole photography instruction each morning: you will learn how to construct your own pinhole cameras, take photographs and make traditional black and white prints in the darkroom
  • Opportunities to pursue your own photography each afternoon
  • All materials are included
  • Transportation to and from airport
  • Small group instruction
  • We will wrap up the week with an exhibition of work produced in the class at the school's exhibition space
  • Room and board

It's You!: Dianne Bos, Unexpected Photographs from Papua New Guinea

The exhibition features a selection of black and white and colour photographs taken by Dianne Bos and by children from informal workshops she conducted there, as well as Papua New Guinea artifacts.
The landscape and culture of Papua New Guinea (PNG) challenged my established perspective on the environment and  pushed me to change my  view and approach to photography.  This is probably one of the few places on the planet that would feel little effect if all modern technologies failed. I felt this was a good place for me to use my low-tech photo devices.

I was fortunate enough to accompany Tim and Sally Goddard and the University of Calgary's, Light up the World (LUTW) group to document the installation of the solar lights in aid posts in PNG.  Their daughter Nichola Goddard was born in PNG grew up in Canada and was killed while serving in Afghanistan. As part of her legacy Light Up The World Foundation is working with her family, to bring light to over 1,100 of these facilities throughout the country.
