"Wonder Rooms", Newzones, Calgary, Nov 26-Jan 16, 2010
This exhibition includes new colour images from Italy and France as well a photo/sculptural works including 'book camera' works and light boxes.
Printed photographs are the end product of my photo process, and it's normal to focus on these of course, but I also have a real interest in the devices that create the images. My ongoing 'book camera' series shows the direct connection between the camera and the image. In this case the 'pinhole device' is an old book I've found on my travels that I have converted into a camera. The images taken with the book not only visually reflect the content but often collect the actual text of the book. Finally, the exhibition also contains pieces in which images I've made with my light collecting boxes have been turned into light boxes themselves--mimicking in miniature the illuminated spaces which were their original sources.
The exhibition title 'Wonder Room' sums up the quality or essence I gathered from these wonderful old interiors I visited whether empty or filled with treasures. It also brings together the other objects I have created which reflect my interest in science, art and nature.
'Wonder Rooms' or Cabinets of Curiosities were a Renaissance invention, a place to store collections of odd objects that were yet to be categorized. They were thought of as being a microcosm or theatre of the world.
